Three years ago today (can it really have already been three years?)…

In honor of our anniversary here’s a look into our big day (note: these are mostly pictures of the stuff, not the people, because I know many people are not comfortable having their pictures posted all over the place…so I’m trying to keep that to a minimum).

I really wanted to get married in front of a lake, but there weren’t really any good places within driving distance and we decided we’d rather have more people get to come and not get married at a lake than to have our ideal location but lots of people have to miss because of the distance.  But we were able to find somewhere with a nice creek behind us.  We got married at The Rawlings in Joelton, TN and it was truly the perfect day.  The weather was beautiful, it wasn’t too hot, and the rained held off until everyone had left.  It was casual and fun (at least for me, I sure hope it was for everyone else!).

The flowers that the flower girls dropped were dried petals from every rose Michael ever gave me.   Many years ago my mom suggested that I always keep the flowers given to me by a boyfriend and then someday if we got married I could use them in the wedding.  So I saved all those roses and it was so special on our wedding day that the rose petals came from years of bouquets.

I can’t believe how little she is in these pictures!  She sure has changed a lot in three years!

 Instead of a traditional guestbook, I made scrapbook pages using our wedding colors with lined paper for guests to sign.  Then later when I scrapbooked our wedding, I mixed the signed scrapbook pages in among the pictures of the reception.  Now our “guestbook” and pictures are all in once place.

I was over the moon with my flowers.  A friend from high school did them and they were gorgeous!

book themed party {Works for Me Wednesday}

Way back when I started working on my master’s, I knew I was going to have a graduation party once I was finished.  And I knew it was going to be book themed…to go along with my master’s in library media education.  So after I graduated Friday night, we had my graduation party the next day at my parents.  Since we were in Gatlinburg until just a few hours before graduation, we really only had Friday night after graduation and Saturday morning to prepare; so it wasn’t anything elaborate, but I love how it turned out.

Obviously this theme works well for a graduation party for someone graduation with a library media degree, but it could also work for a birthday party or a baby shower (have the guests bring children’s books as their gifts).

Let’s start with the invitations.  I wanted the invitations to be in the form of an old library card:

(FYI, this is not the exact invite that I sent out…I changed some of the more personal info for the one I wanted to post on here…gotta watch out for those creepers, ya know?)

This is the template that I used for the library card.  It was a Word document so I just edited it so that it had my party info on it and used the fonts I liked.  Then I printed the cards onto white card stock and cut them out (four to a piece of card stock).

Here’s one that you could use if you have Photoshop (I don’t, so I couldn’t use it, but I thought it was cute)

I traced the template onto those yellow file folders, cut them out, folded them, and stamped them with a stamp that we have that says “From the *OUR NAME* Family Library”

Then I just put them in small, card-sized envelopes and mailed them off.

Once that was done, it was on to the party details.  I really wanted the food to go along with books but it also needed to be really simple since we didn’t have much time to spend cooking.  I searched online and asked for ideas from my Facebook friends (I got tons of super creative ones!).  This is what I came up with:

1. Green Eggs and Ham………………………..deviled eggs and ham sandwiches (the filling for the deviled eggs was supposed to be tinted green but I completely forgot to do that!)

The decorations were also very simple – mostly we just displayed some of my favorite books

2. favorite young adult books (Harry Potter, Twilight, and Hunger Games)

3. more favorites on the end table: Deputy Dan Gets His Man, Amelia Bedelia, and Junie B. Jones

4. centerpiece on the table: stack of Little House on the Prairie books, jar full of chunky/baby books, Beach Day, and my all time favorite book – Brown Bear, Brown Bear

we also invited the guests to write some of their favorite books on the chalkboard wall in the kitchen

So there you have it: very simple, quick, and easy, but also very fun.  I was pleased with how it turned out!

Erin’s baby shower

This weekend we went back to Lexington for Erin’s baby shower.  Chris and Erin are expecting a baby boy, Noah Ray, in July.  Jonie and Julie threw a beautiful jungle-themed shower that went along with Noah’s nursery.

Jonie made these animal picture frames to use as centerpieces for the tables then gave them to Erin to use in the nursery.  I loved them! Such a cute idea!

I made the cupcakes for the shower – strawberry with cream cheese icing and white with chocolate buttercream icing.  I wish I could, but I can’t take the credit for the super cute cupcake toppers; Julie ordered the fondant toppers (from Etsy, I think) and we placed them on the frosted cupcakes.

that mesh netting thing has been so handy – Erin used it first for Julie’s shower, and it has been used for several other showers since then; it’s easy to decorate to match the colors/theme of the shower!

High Five for Friday

Friday!  Woo Hoo!  Here are a few exciting things…

1. I’m headed to a ladies’ retreat with our church tonight.  I’m super excited but I’m also a little nervous since we’re new and I don’t know anyone very well…but I guess this will be a great way to get to know the other women from church!

2. I got to see my sweet little Nora this weekend.  Who could resist this cutie?  I can’t believe how much she’s grown!  It feels like we had her shower.

3. After Amanda’s shower on Saturday, we stayed the night in Lexington.  Sunday after church we were getting ready to head home and got a call from our realtor….WE GOT AN OFFER ON OUR HOUSE!  The paperwork has been taken care of and we should close before the end of May.  Fingers crossed for all to go well with closing!  That will be such a relief to get the house sold.

Speaking of the shower…

Gina, Erin, Jonie, and Julie threw a wonderful shower!  Thanks for all your hard work, ladies!  And Amanda (well, baby Abby, actually) got tons of great stuff.

4. I’m loving my new dress and I’m already wishing for some extra time so I can make another!

5. I tried another baked oatmeal recipe this week – strawberry, banana, chocolate chip.  Yummo.

I need some excuses to have parties.  I am having a party after graduation, and it’s going to be book themed (I mean, I got my master’s in library media education, it just makes sense…), and I’m super excited about it.  But other than that, I got nothin’.  I keep seeing all these awesome party ideas on Pinterest and I don’t have any need for them, so if you can think of other reasons for me to have parties, let me know!

Here are some of my favorite ideas:

1. A mashed-tini bar.  Make tons of mashed potatoes, put them in martini glasses, and then set out tons of yummy potato toppings.  The variety of toppings she listed was incredible.

birthday bash

Even though my birthday week is over, we still had one more birthday celebration – birthday with my family.  We were supposed to celebrate the weekend before my birthday but the threat of snow (that didn’t actually come) caused us to reschedule.  This weekend actually worked out better since it was right before Riley’s birthday (Mine was February 21, Riley’s was March 5) so we celebrate both of ours at once.

Saturday afternoon we went out to eat at Red Lobster for lunch (Riley’s pick).  Daddy, Michael and Brendan went home while Mom, Riley, Ben, Chris, (Ben and Chris are Riley’s friends from college who came for the weekend) and I did a little shopping.  We went to Goodwill (it was 50% off day!!) – the boys bought all kinds of random things, I found a super cute jacket that I love!  (be looking for it in next week’s What I Wore Wednesday).  I also found some fantastic, looked-like-new, Nine West black heels.  I really liked them but they were too big (which is pretty incredible given my big ‘ole feet) so I didn’t buy them.  My most amazing Goodwill find of the day, though, was a pair of pleather maternity pants…I mean, really???  Because I’m not crazy sadly I didn’t buy them.  We also went to the mall and looked around some.

Riley bought some of those odd toe glove shoe things – I tried some on while we were at the store just for kicks and I thought they were uncomfortable but hopefully he likes them

Saturday night we had chicken and dumplings (my pick) and then Mom and I made KevinandAmanda’s brownie batter chocolate fudge cupcakes for dessert.  They did not disappoint!  In fact, everyone LOVED them!

Halloween 2011 – Picnics and Charlie Sheen

Trunk or Treat was last night – we had a blast and I carried my camera around all night but failed to take any pictures.  Boo on me.  But we did get pictures of our costumes before we left.

I was a picnic (with a trail of ants on the tablecloth that didn’t show up in the picture) and Michael was a YouTube video of Charlie Sheen.  I loved our costumes and was really pleased with how they turned out.  And the best part – they were cheap and easy!  They took about an hour to make and cost less than $6.00.  All I had to buy for mine was the tablecloth and then I just glued some of my stuff and some of Mom’s stuff to the tablecloth.  For Michael’s we just had to buy the poster board (by the way, he did the whole thing himself – very impressive!)

Halloween Flashback

I’m currently working on my Halloween costume and I’ll show you that tomorrow (it’s super cute!) but today I thought I’d show some costumes from the past.  I know I showed you these costumes before in my weight loss post so you could see a comparison, but here they are again.

Halloween 2006.  Michael was a worker bee and I was a queen bee.

Halloween 2007.  I was a pumpkin and Michael was pie.  Together we were pumpkin pie.

(Due to our math-geekiness I made Michael edible pie on the front and mathematical pie…tee hee hee)

Those are the only Halloween costumes I can find on our computer.  As you can see, I’m all about cheap, easy costumes.  Both years our costumes consisted mostly of painted t-shirts (by yours truly) and accessorized with what we already had.  Stay tuned to see this year’s costume…

boomerangs and birthdays

Fun fall days are the best.  Spending time with family is the best.  This weekend we got to have both.

Saturday night was when we were planning to celebrate Brendan’s birthday.  Poor guy – his birthday is actually in July but with Mom having to spend most of the summer in Mayfield taking care of Granddaddy and then Brendan and Riley going to back school and then Michael and me moving, we haven’t had any time to do his family birthday party.  This weekend we finally made it happen.

We left Chattanooga Friday afternoon and instead of going back to Bowling Green and then turning around Saturday and coming back to Springfield we just decided to stay in Springfield Friday night.

I got all my grad school assignments done by Friday night so Saturday we just got to relax and play.

We watched tons of home videos from when we were little.  And laughed.  And laughed.  And laughed.  And probably scared Biskie with all our crazy antics as children.
