date of the month club

For Valentine’s Day this year, I created a “date of the month” club and gave it to Michael.  What I did was I planned 1 date per month for the next 12 months.  I tried to think of things that were unique and different (not our usual restaurants and our usual Redbox movie).  I also tried t0 come up with dates that would help us experience local venues and activities in Lexington.  I cannot take credit for this awesome idea – I found the idea at While He Was Napping (I tried to find the specific post, but I couldn’t) and she used to sell a date of the month kit in her etsy shop (I don’t know if she still does).  I used her idea but I came up with most of the dates on my own so they would be Lexington specific.

Warning: this will be a long and picture-filled post.  Since I didn’t start blogging until August and we started our dates of the month in February I have a lot to catch you up on :) .

February: Bookstore Scavenger Hunt

I created a list of categories of books; we each got a list, had to go get a book that fit in that category, and bring it back to show the other person.  We did our scavenger hunt at Joseph Beth and then ate supper at the Bronte Bistro in Joseph Beth.

a book you read in high school

a book that was made into a movie

a book about a place you want to travel

favorite children’s book

our completed lists

March: Fondue Night

We ate dinner at Panera and then made chocolate fondue at home.

yum

April: Keenland

We went to Keenland one Saturday in April.  We watched one race and then each picked a horse to place a $2.00 bet on for a second race.  We also got to see the horses out in the yard before they raced.  After we left Keenland we went to Cheapside Bar and Grill in downtown Lexington.

excited for Keenland!

May: Italian Night

We ate at our favorite Italian restaurant in Lexington (Bella Notte) and watched our favorite “Italian” movie (The Italian Job)

June: Raven Run Nature Sanctuary

We went on a hike at Raven Run Nature Sanctuary in Lexington.  The hike was about 4 miles but it wasn’t very difficult and it was so pretty.  I don’t remember exactly what we ate for supper, but I do remember that we were so exhausted after our hike that we didn’t want to get dressed up to go back out to eat so we just had take out.

July: Mini Golf

The plan for July was that we were going to do “X-Treme” sports – mini golf and ice skating.  The Lexington Ice Center offers miniature golf and ice skating so that’s where we went.  We golfed first and the course was so cute – all the courses were Biblical: one was the New Testament, one was the Old Testament, and one was Miracles.  We did the New Testament course but we would love to go back again to do the others.  It rained on us a little but not enough to deter these pro-golfers!  After we golfed we went over to the ice skating area and found out that they don’t open up the skating rink until August!  We then tried to go roller skating at another place but they were about to close down for a long break between before their late night skate.  We finally just decided to go on and eat since we were hungry.  We ate at Tolly Ho – famous for their hamburgers.  I didn’t really think it was anything special but it was fun to try another local place.

August: well…

Our date of the month in August was supposed to be Michael’s pick of restaurant, action movie, and dessert; however, we didn’t manage to accomplish that this month.  We did go out to dinner, watch tv/movies, and eat dessert several times but none of them were the “official” date and Michael didn’t get exclusive pick either.  Life has been so crazy that I just let August get away from me!  I feel terrible, but I’m planning just to double up in September and have 2 dates of the month.

So there you have it…our dates of the month so far.  I’ll continue posting as we complete more.
